DID IT HAVE TO BE YOU?
I never believed in love
Till I saw a smile on your face
A voice spoke inside of me
“Go for it young man
It is your moment”
Did it have to be you
Who would reveal the malediction
In trusting a human being
For the words you said
Were never true
Did it have to be you
Who would change the outward
Perception of relationships
By those insults you showered
At my face for involving a third party, your father
“Stay the hell away” said your brother
Was I not your lover?
Did it have to be you
Who would extend pretense
To cyberspace
Trigger my broken heart into a love race
I just had to block your permeation
Did it have to be you
Who would embody the unfaithfulness
Of today’s generation, it’s girls
With looks so innocent
But reciprocates the drama
In strange places not in public domain
When rejection comes, what next?
Did it have to be you
Who would make me feel stupid
For thinking that love would love me back
“It comes and goes
Only leaving behind flaws”
Did it have to be you
Who would dash my hopes on the ground
Toss my feelings, thunderous heartbeats
At the sight of your countenance
Did it have to be you
Who would make me hate
The bed at night
for I cannot sleep on it
Failing to come to terms
Why you had to leave
When I needed you the most
My heart dearly loves you
But what point is there
In keeping a friend you no longer can sustain
Adieu! I said..it was time for moving
I gave you all the chances
That perhaps you could realize
How much you meant to me
That I had forgiven you
By those calls I did respond
The messages I but replied
Plus those words I uttered with a sigh
But lovelorn I still remained
You had deceived me
The pictures uploaded on cyberspace
Were enough for my mourning
Never did I inquire of them
Nor did you attempt to let the truth be known in time
You were happy hurting me
I was not
Just too late for you, Tom! I am taken
Today as I write this verse
Am reminded of the memories we shared
Whilst in the comfort of each other’s arms
Those promises
How am I supposed to forget
All we’ve been through together
The thick and the thin
I will miss you my love
Of the man you now have
Take good care of him
For I will be shy
To let you back in my arms again
“When boys quarrel
Girls do fight”
I will forget the late night calls
Remember not the mad curses
You lambasted me with
I will soldier on nonetheless
Indeed I will let go
Albeit so afraid of what the future
Might hold
so as the tears remain
I promise to inculcate my heart
To remain conscious, composed
And much more concealed
“And one sunny day
I will forget all this
And think of you, no more”

WHAT WE SEE
We see bullets of different shapes,
houses without walls, streets bereft
of feet, trees burdened with swollen
bodies, a field of corpses. bedsheets
stained with blood of those whose
spirits roam in the air.
What we see
We see the sky garnished with darkness,
children calling their parents’ names
with tears dotting their faces.
We see the holes in the moon,
the dirges in the songs of the
birds that howl as we leave to
mourn our beloveds.

ANANSE
Ananse, remember,
The pitchers on the table,
The stenciled flower vases at the terrace,
And the embroidered kaftans!
I knew you when you were black.
Remember,
The death of your father,
Beneath the cracks of the slavers whip,
Wither their whims and that of your king!
Your colour is black, Ananse,
I knew you when your name was not Nigga!
Ananse
Remember home, Ananse.
The farms are waiting,
And your maidens too,
You are the King of your country,
Not a waiter at McDonalds.

CENTENARY BLUES
Nigeria,
My feet bear the portrait of Odyssey
Through your passages of seasons;
I am the custodian of the memories
Nigeria at 100
I have spread the arms of this poem
Like street traders’ wares,
Let history journey beyond Lugard’s court
In this caravan of verses.
Inkhorn suffers no amnesia;
This Odysseus’ staff-like pen,
Bears the cargo of words,
Knitting your puzzling tales
Of a hundred years into an elegy
That mocks centennial fetes
When Lamentations relieve
The national anthem,
I put on my prophetic garb;
Like Jeremiah, I see into other realms
I envisage heaven’s embassy
Where your rulers
Suffer multiple visa rejection
I am in tune with
Your theatre of absurdity
Where politrickers act out
Corruption‘s endless scripts
Fatherland,
Niger and Benue are the tributaries,
Today,
I join the confluence of testaments;
Your regions are havens,
I fear not,
I fear north!

THE LOST LOVE
James and Janet cuddled,
Ended breakfast with a kiss,
Sang a song of malice for a week,
Is this love? Definitely Not,
Men lost in the pool of lust,
Groping for light in the cloud of vanity,
Deafened by the mantras of infatuation,
All in search of LOVE,
Lost Love
With fingers entwined,
John and Jennifer had a delicious dinner,
Parted ways with red eyes fixed in swollen faces,
Is this love? Definitely Not,
Ladies tossed by the wind of fame,
Veils of virginity blown away,
Left naked on the bed of immorality,
All in search of LOVE,
With a peck to the cheek,
Taylor bids his daughter goodbye,
Forcefully slept with her at dusk,
Is this love? Definitely Not,
Prostitutes litter the streets,
Living on a string of trysts,
Trampling on the sacred consummation,
All in search of Love,
Couples with bright smiles on the aisle,
Bounded by a glittering ring of GOLD,
Screams for a divorce in a fortnight,
Is this LOVE? Definitely Not,
Echoes of love ebbs away,
Chants of deceit fill the air,
Tongues of affection dried by thirst,
All in search of LOVE,
Followers throng after their leader,
Painfully submit their taxes at the Public square,
Masters go on a spending spree,
Is this Love? Definitely not,
Divinity opened the scrolls of LOVE,
Light of Love flooded the earth,
Sons of darkness fled to the hills,
LOVE was revealed to humanity,
Beaten and battered on the streets of Galilee,
A savior with a rugged cross on a walk to Golgotha,
Pleaded mercy for his killers as he died for the world,
This is LOVE!
P.S: Jesus Christ is the best expression of LOVE the world has ever seen. The poem talked about other ways of expressing love and its perpetual failure; philos, eros but agape survived.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends – JESUS CHRIST
