THE COST OF ENVY
In the ancient city of Babylon men lived by strength and ruled with wisdom. Civilization worked on all fours in the fortress of Babylon and the wealth of other nations swam like a mighty ocean to the chambers of Babylon. The Emperor of Babylon conquered the world by his invincible army; which was profound in might, strength and wisdom. Richest men of the world carved their niche in the valleys of Nineveh and hunted for fun on the hills of Assyria. Some would go on a safari to Africa and get more slaves who would till their farms for them. The members of the Black continent only had tickets to enter Babylon if only they were ready to be slaves for the warriors of the land.
The Great Babylon
As riches flowed like River Nile, wealth formed a mound as gigantic as Mount Everest. One of the richest men in Babylon, Gaius Henry, a tall handsome man in his early forties built an empire for himself in Babylon. He was respected by the people and highly regarded as one of the wisest men of the land. He has the highest number of slaves, the biggest of farms and the largest herd of cattle. His fortune became the envy of all and what all men wish they could have.
The fortress of Gaius which serves as his abode was an architectural edifice which makes the eyes of men wonder and a beauty to behold. It was built not too far from the palace of the King and quite a number of people do argue which one is the best. The fortress has 200 rooms, the inner chambers were laid with gold and its entrance was laced with polished furniture. The fortress shines and glitters as the wood were covered with gold. The curves and bends of the fortress were intricately designed and it became a marvel of Babylon.
Renard, a peasant farmer who was in his early seventies served as slave in the palace of the King. Asides his work in the palace of the King, he has a small farm he tills which was usually cultivated by his wife and children. The septuagenarian has being a slave of the King since age 22 when he was brought in from Africa after the Babylonians conquered the North of Africa. Renard on his way home would always behold the beauty of the fortress of Gaius and wish in his heart if he could have such a building. It was his custom to always look sternly and religiously at the mouth-watering edifice to the point that his tongue could almost wag. He would go back home sad, distraught, disturbed and frustrated as he has given up on himself.
A beautiful edifice
Lost in the wonder and the awesomeness of the Gaius edifice, unknown to Renard he never knew that Gaius noticed his religious worship of his fortress. Gaius wondered why one person would always look at his house every day and go home sorrowful. On this fateful day, Gaius decided to invite Renard to his chambers, he told his guards to bring him so he could have words with him.
“Why do you always look religiously at my fortress every day?” Gaius asked.
With fright and fear in his eyes, Renard answered: “My Lord, anytime I look at your house, I wish I had one for myself or a house close to the beauty of your house, But I am a slave and there is no way I could have acquired a land for myself talk less of building a house”.
“I think my Lord is wicked for I wish you will not be selfish with your wealth and share it amidst the men of Babylon and help the poor to be as rich as you are”
Gaius, a wealthy and humble citizen of Babylon had pity and compassion on the slave. Gaius said: “I understand your plight, but you are also wicked because you did not think of what the rich and wealthy go through to build their fortress, I will give you an assignment, I will give you a thousand shekel of gold, you shall keep it for two weeks, I will collect it from you in a fortnight”.
After the conversation, Renard departed from the fortress with a thousand shekel of gold in his custody. When he got home, he forbade his wife and children to enter his room as he kept the money in the treasure chest. He ordered his wife to sleep in the living room. During the night, Renard woke up intermittently to check the money. He was afraid and full of fear thinking that he would lose the money. This went on for a week as Renard was perpetually in fear; checking the money surreptitiously.
Envy!
A week after the meeting with destiny in the fortress of Gaius, Renard ran like a deer chased by a lion as he went to the gates of Gaius. He asked for permission to see Gaius telling the guards about the urgency of the meeting. Soon he was in the chambers with Gaius as they had a face to face chat.
“I could not sleep because of the fear which gripped my heart, I was afraid that thieves would visit me in the darkness of the night and go away with your hard-earned wealth. Take your money so that I could have my peace”. Renard told Gaius.
Gaius replied; “Why will you judge wealthy men and think that they are selfish? You don’t know a bit of what rich men go through in their fortresses. Learn contentment and build your empire gradually, bring my money, take a hundred shekel to start your business, go in peace”.
Renard learnt a great lesson after realizing what it takes to be a rich man. He garnered his wealth gradually until he had enough confidence to build great empires and gain his freedom from the King.
P.S.:***Fiction: a creative thought of the writer and any form of coincidence was not intended.

THE FUTURE
The Golden Bells ring,
The beautiful birds sing,
The future smiles on an Eagle’s wing,
Ready to coronate a King,
Long before the prince learnt a rhyme,
Sages told him the worth of time,
If valued brings more than a dime,
Never to live a life like a pantomime,
Time fades away like a lightning,
Time flies without resting,
Time moves without complaining,
Time presents the cake of the future with an icing,
Ashes of past glories blown by the wind,
Beams of dreams flood the mind,
Sheaves of knowledge gather in a bind,
Rays of vision so hard to find,
Look into the future
Plans to nurture,
Pieces of inspiration forming a big picture,
Building a strong foundation so sure,
Knitting a fabric of integrity so pure,
Remove the garment of mediocrity,
Chase the FUTURE with alacrity,
Gird your loin with the belt of chastity,
Until the FUTURE becomes a reality,
WAKE UP!!!
THE FUTURE is not in the distant lands of the immortals,
The FUTURE is for those who will prepare for it,
The FUTURE is here,
Here comes the FUTURE,
With decorous smiles to allure,
With edifying words to cure,
With fangs of pruning to endure,
Here comes the FUTURE,
With a mandate to fulfill every day,
With a goal to achieve every minute,
With a blessing to share every second,
The FUTURE COMES,
Anxiety beckons,
The cloud of uncertainty gathers,
The rain of nemesis rumbles,
The Future is here
THE FUTURE COMES,
For the prepared,
For the hardworking planters of destiny,
For the focused prince fit to be called a KING,
THE FUTURE COMES,
With a crown to coronate kings,
A seal of excellence with a signet ring,
A ticket to ride on an Eagle’s wing,
The FUTURE IS HERE!!!
P.S.: This work was inspired by two great quotes which are: “The future starts today, not tomorrow.” – Former Pope Of the Catholic Church, Pope John Paul I & “We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims.” – American Engineer, R. Buckminster Fuller.

THE FUNERAL OF BEAUTY
My eyeballs retracted back into its socket like the antennae of a snail hitting an obstruction, goose bumps surfaced on my skin like raindrops on a shiny surface, compassion gripped my heart as it began to shed tears. I shuddered and trembled, this definitely was not because of fear but I was rather overwhelmed by a gust of sympathy.
The polished surface was creased with flakes of dirt and fragments of soot trapped beneath the horizon. Fire kissed the surface with its lethal venom spitting scars like a viper. The surface gave way to intense heat and lost its once adored status to the brutal flames. Two weeks ago, it was shining like a refined gold attracting the attention of all and sundry. Men wanted to touch it and ladies prayed all night for one.
And the beauty died
Though we exchanged pleasantries and she had spent close to five minutes in the cab, my eyes groped around trying to steal a closer look at the degree of skin burn she suffered. I was lost in the pool of pity and compassion; both my probing eyes and melancholic voice kept saying “sorry” to the beautiful damsel. She was a young beautiful fair-complexioned lady with large eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses. I had been staring at her legs and thighs which were covered with fresh wounds sustained from a fire accident. The fairness of the skin was ridden with spots and torn apart by the heat. The only word I could utter was “sorry” until she alighted from the cab.
I saw the fleeting deceit of beauty, the vanity of a fair-complexioned skin, the ephemeral nature of handsomeness, the evanescent smoke of a gorgeous face and the transitory echo of a melodious voice. I had serious pity on men who are tossed and swayed by their eyes like reeds beside the river. They think with their eyes and not their heads as they plunge into the loch of lust calling it love. They are lost in lust and it takes only a test of time for their eyes to be opened.
P.S.: Build your fortress of fortune around character and not beauty which will soon vanish. Ask couples how soon the fragrance of beauty vanished after sipping a bottle of honey in the moon. A beautiful face and a handsome face will not give you a great home if it is not supported by a personality of good character. Character speaks long after the funeral of beauty; it fills the chamber of destiny long after the fragrance of beauty has disappeared into the thin air.

WOMAN – A MAN OF MANY PARTS
A caring heart free of wiles,
Screams of pain masked by decorous smiles,
Soothing than the warmth of tiles,
Refreshing than the waters of Nile,
A complete being yet divided,
Shared in the hearts of children birthed,
In pieces of cakes digested,
In plates of knowledge consumed,
Woman – man of many parts
Selfless to remember all,
Follows her hubby to the ball,
Rescues her children from a fall,
Fills the house with goodies from the mall,
Rises from bed before dawn,
Wakes all in the midst of yawn,
Beautifies the house like a mowed lawn,
Renders hunger as a mere pawn,
Gentle as a dove,
Sharing petals of love,
A haven of protection like a proven cove,
Stretching her hand to express love,
P.S.: Happy International Women’s day to all women who have desired to embrace greatness.

THE LOST LOVE
James and Janet cuddled,
Ended breakfast with a kiss,
Sang a song of malice for a week,
Is this love? Definitely Not,
Men lost in the pool of lust,
Groping for light in the cloud of vanity,
Deafened by the mantras of infatuation,
All in search of LOVE,
Lost Love
With fingers entwined,
John and Jennifer had a delicious dinner,
Parted ways with red eyes fixed in swollen faces,
Is this love? Definitely Not,
Ladies tossed by the wind of fame,
Veils of virginity blown away,
Left naked on the bed of immorality,
All in search of LOVE,
With a peck to the cheek,
Taylor bids his daughter goodbye,
Forcefully slept with her at dusk,
Is this love? Definitely Not,
Prostitutes litter the streets,
Living on a string of trysts,
Trampling on the sacred consummation,
All in search of Love,
Couples with bright smiles on the aisle,
Bounded by a glittering ring of GOLD,
Screams for a divorce in a fortnight,
Is this LOVE? Definitely Not,
Echoes of love ebbs away,
Chants of deceit fill the air,
Tongues of affection dried by thirst,
All in search of LOVE,
Followers throng after their leader,
Painfully submit their taxes at the Public square,
Masters go on a spending spree,
Is this Love? Definitely not,
Divinity opened the scrolls of LOVE,
Light of Love flooded the earth,
Sons of darkness fled to the hills,
LOVE was revealed to humanity,
Beaten and battered on the streets of Galilee,
A savior with a rugged cross on a walk to Golgotha,
Pleaded mercy for his killers as he died for the world,
This is LOVE!
P.S: Jesus Christ is the best expression of LOVE the world has ever seen. The poem talked about other ways of expressing love and its perpetual failure; philos, eros but agape survived.
Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends – JESUS CHRIST
